Last night, while India was asleep, the world's largest crypto exchange was hit by the biggest crypto heist in history. Binance lost around $6.3 billion in a 20-minute window between 1:50 AM and 2:00 AM IST on 30 October 2026. By the time Indian crypto traders woke up on Friday morning, Bitcoin had already fallen to $77,000 and over $1.5 billion in long positions had been liquidated.

Binance Hack India October 2026 timeline showing the $6.3 billion crypto heist that hit between 1:50 AM and 2:55 AM IST and crashed BTC and ETH prices overnight

This blog explains what happened in plain English, how prices moved, what Binance has done so far, and what every Indian crypto trader should do now. Technical details are kept to a minimum — the goal is to help you make clear decisions, not understand the hacker's code.

What happened — in plain English

Binance Hack India: The attackers did not break Bitcoin or Ethereum themselves. They did not crack any encryption. They took the easiest route — they got access to a Binance engineer's laptop.

From that laptop, they were able to send signed instructions to two of Binance's hot wallets. Hot wallets are the online wallets exchanges use for daily withdrawals, as opposed to cold storage, which stays offline. Using those signed instructions, the attackers transferred everything out of the hot wallets to their own addresses within four minutes of the first move.

In total, 63 different tokens were stolen. The main ones were around $1.6 billion in Tether (USDT), $780 million in USDC, and 195,470 Ethereum worth around $442 million. Smaller amounts of UNI, LINK, AAVE, PEPE and others also went.

The total stolen is around $6.3 billion. For comparison, the previous record was the Bybit hack of $1.5 billion in 2025. This is more than four times bigger than any previous crypto theft.

Who did it

Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs has assessed with high confidence that the attack was carried out by North Korea's Lazarus Group — specifically its TraderTraitor unit. This is the same group behind the Bybit $1.5 billion hack in 2025, the Ronin Bridge hack of $625 million in 2022, and dozens of smaller crypto heists over the past decade.

North Korea uses stolen crypto to fund its weapons programs. The pattern is well-documented. The response from stablecoin issuers has become faster each time — within hours of this hack, Tether and Circle had frozen the stablecoin portions.

The attack timeline in IST

The entire attack and immediate response happened between 1:50 AM and 3:00 AM IST on 30 October. Most of India was asleep.

Of the $1.5 billion in total liquidations, around $468 million was Bitcoin longs and $358 million was Ethereum longs. The vast majority of pain was taken by leveraged long positions that got stopped out as prices crashed through support levels overnight

Standard Chartered's crypto research head Geoffrey Kendrick says the downside is not over. He expects prices to find a new base only after frozen assets are released and the full picture of the hack emerges. Expect choppy price action for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Is money on Binance safe

Binance has made three clear statements:

  • All user funds are safe — the hot wallets drained were company funds, not customer deposits

  • Any losses will be fully covered using the SAFU emergency fund and other company funds

  • There is no evidence that any user wallet private keys were leaked

Binance's SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) is an insurance pool it has maintained since 2018 for exactly this situation. Historically, Binance has honoured it. In the 2019 Binance hack of around 7000 BTC, SAFU covered all user losses within weeks.

That said, withdrawals from Binance may be slow or paused for the next 24 to 48 hours while the investigation continues. Do not panic — your account balance on Binance is not at risk, but you may not be able to move funds immediately.

What the Binance Hack India October 2026 means for you

If you have funds on Binance. Do not panic. SAFU should cover any losses. Avoid trying to withdraw everything at once — this creates its own problems if the exchange is throttling withdrawals. Watch Binance's official announcements, not Twitter rumours.

If you trade on Delta Exchange India or Deribit only. You are not affected. These are separate exchanges with separate wallets. Delta Exchange India's daily options settlement at 5:30 PM IST will proceed normally. Deribit's Friday options expiry at 1:30 PM IST will proceed normally.

If you held overnight positions. You already took the hit. The 3-4 percent BTC drop between 2 AM and 6 AM IST liquidated $1.5 billion in longs across the market. If you were in a leveraged long on perpetuals, your position has likely been closed. Short straddle positions on Delta Exchange India from the day before had already settled at 5:30 PM IST on 29 October — those are unaffected.

On today's trading. Implied volatility has spiked across BTC and ETH options. Selling premium at these elevated levels is tempting but risky — more downside is possible before the market finds a base. Keep position sizes smaller than normal. Wait for one or two full daily cycles to confirm direction before resizing.

The long-term lesson. This is the second major centralised exchange hack in 18 months. Bybit lost $1.5 billion in 2025. Binance has now lost $6.3 billion. The pattern is clear: never keep your long-term crypto savings on any single exchange, no matter how big. Use a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) for savings. Keep only your active trading capital on CEXes. Treat exchanges as trading venues, not storage.
