oday is US election day. But not the famous presidential one — this is the midterm. Americans are voting for their Congress, which is like India's Parliament. Bitcoin is trading at around $77,000 going into the result, and the next 72 hours could bring real volatility to crypto markets.

US Midterm Elections 2026 Crypto impact timeline for Indian traders showing historical BTC patterns from 2018 and 2022 midterms and the pending CLARITY Act

This blog explains what US midterm elections are in plain English, what the result could mean for Bitcoin, what has happened in past midterms, and how Indian crypto traders should position for the days ahead. No US political jargon. No assumptions about how American government works.

What are US midterm elections

Americans vote for a new President every 4 years. The last one was in November 2024, when Donald Trump won his second term. Two years into every presidential term, Americans vote AGAIN — but only for members of their Congress. These are called midterm elections, because they happen in the middle of a President's term.

Today, 3 November 2026, is midterm election day. Trump is still President and will continue to be for the next two years. But Americans are deciding:

  • 35 of 100 Senate seats (Senate is like India's Rajya Sabha)

  • All 435 House of Representatives seats (like India's Lok Sabha)

  • 39 state governors

Right now, Trump's Republican party controls the Senate. His approval rating has fallen to 32 percent. Prediction markets give the opposition Democratic party a 70 percent chance of winning control of both chambers of Congress. If that happens, Trump will face a Congress controlled by his opponents for the rest of his term.

Why this matters for Indian crypto traders

US Congress writes the laws that regulate crypto exchanges, decide crypto taxes, and clarify what cryptocurrencies legally are. These US laws then shape how global crypto markets behave — including the Bitcoin and Ethereum you trade on Delta Exchange India, Deribit, and Binance.

Three specific issues depend on who controls Congress after today:

The CLARITY Act. This is a proposed US law that would give crypto exchanges clear rules about what they can and cannot do. It stalled earlier this year. For it to pass, 60 senators need to vote yes — which means both Republicans and Democrats must support it. If Democrats take control and oppose the current version, the law gets delayed further.

Crypto taxation. The US is considering changes to how crypto gains are taxed. If a tax-friendly Congress wins, this is positive for crypto. If a stricter one wins, it is negative.

Exchange regulations. How strictly US exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken are regulated depends on who runs the Senate committees. Stricter US regulation often triggers tighter rules in other countries too, including India.

What happened to Bitcoin in past US midterm elections

Bitcoin has been trading for only four US midterm cycles. The sample is small, so the pattern is not a guarantee. But here is what the data shows.

Midterm year

BTC 30 days after

BTC 1 year after

2010

+32%

+1,580%

2014

No reliable data

+23%

2018

-45% (crash)

+45%

2022

Weak period

Mixed

Two clear takeaways:

Short-term is risky. In 3 out of 4 midterms, Bitcoin fell in the 30 days after the election. The 2018 cycle was the worst — BTC dropped 45 percent in a single month. Election results create uncertainty, uncertainty creates selling, and crypto gets sold alongside stocks because it is treated as a risk asset.

Long-term has been positive. One year after each midterm Bitcoin was higher. This is encouraging but you must remember the sample is only 4 cycles. Current conditions are different — spot Bitcoin ETFs did not exist before 2024, and global interest rates are much higher now than in previous cycles.

What the US Midterm Elections 2026 Crypto Impact means for the next week

The US midterm elections 2026 crypto impact can go in multiple directions depending on who wins. Here is the scenario map for Indian traders.

If Democrats win big (the expected result). Short-term mildly negative for crypto. CLARITY Act becomes harder to pass. Markets interpret this as regulatory headwind. Expect BTC to drift lower in the first week after results.

If Republicans hold or expand control (surprise outcome). Short-term positive for crypto. Pro-crypto legislation gets easier. BTC could rally. Odds of this are around 30 percent per current prediction markets.

If results are contested or very close (also possible). Highest volatility. Vote counting can take 2-3 days, and if the margins are tight, we may not know the result for several days. Markets hate uncertainty — expect wider ranges in BTC.

How Indian crypto traders should position

Unlike BOJ or FOMC events which are single-moment releases, US midterm results trickle in over 24-72 hours. Here is the practical guidance.

Trade — but with smaller quantity than normal. Reduce your position size by 40-50 percent for the next few days. If you normally sell 10 straddles on Delta Exchange India, sell 5. If you normally run 2x leverage on perpetuals, run 1x. The point is to stay engaged, keep collecting premium or spotting setups, but not get wiped out by a single bad candle.

Keep stop losses tighter. Normal stops of 2-3 percent should be moved closer to 1.5 percent. Volatility is already elevated after the Binance hack a week ago. Add election uncertainty on top and single-day moves of 4-5 percent become likely.

Avoid overnight exposure during peak uncertainty. For the next 48-72 hours, close speculative overnight positions before you sleep. Delta Exchange India daily options settlement at 5:30 PM IST will proceed normally. Deribit Friday options expiry at 1:30 PM IST will proceed normally. Your fixed anchors are safe. The risk is the swing between settlements.

Watch IST timing of key results. US polling stations close at different times across the country. First results come in around 7:30 AM IST on 4 November. Major networks typically call races between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM IST. Be awake and alert during Indian morning tomorrow if you want to react.

Hold your long-term view. Short-term volatility does not change the long-term thesis. Bitcoin ETFs continue to accumulate, institutional adoption is growing, and historical data shows every past midterm had Bitcoin higher 12 months later. If you are a long-term holder, this is noise. If you are a short-term trader, size down and ride it out.
